asciilifeform: i can only reach it via kvm
BingoBoingo: Is it responsing to pings now?
asciilifeform: now yes
asciilifeform: what was the issue ?
BingoBoingo: ethernet cable poorly seated after re-racking box following interior inspection
asciilifeform: ugh ok
asciilifeform: nao plox pgp the root pw to asciilifeform , i'ma set up realtime dumpage of the machine log.
asciilifeform: so when it dies again , to find why.

BingoBoingo: ben_vulpes: Are you around?
asciilifeform: ty
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: you didn't pgp it to asciilifeform's pub, lol
asciilifeform: plox to resend
BingoBoingo: http://p.bvulpes.com/pastes/nSEJ9/?raw=true
asciilifeform: i get a 'Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive)' logging in
asciilifeform: aaand i need proper root for kvm.
asciilifeform: since you have sudo, go ahead and randomize the root pw and pgp new one.
asciilifeform: ben_vulpes can eat it later.
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: ...problem ?
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: i'ma have tea, brb in 20m or so

asciilifeform: nuffing in particular, yet
asciilifeform: will let you know.
asciilifeform: for nao, get comfortable, but dun fall asleep
BingoBoingo: Aite
asciilifeform: ty BingoBoingo
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: what's the physical ps config on UY1 ? ( 1? 2? we have spare ? )
BingoBoingo: UY1 has two installed power supplies. I will have to dig through the notes and bilge to see if one of the spare power supplies is a UY1 power supply.
asciilifeform: pleez.
asciilifeform: ( i do not currently have any evidence to suspect the ps, but would like to establish whether we have spare. )
asciilifeform: i assume both ps are connected /
asciilifeform: ?
asciilifeform: plz make sure that they are ( and to separate panels )
asciilifeform: ok about to reboot uy1.
BingoBoingo: We do not have a UY1 spare, both installed ps are connected to different panels
asciilifeform: ty
BingoBoingo: What's the next step?
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: can stand down for nao.
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: may or may not need to pay an evening visit to the cage, lessee laters.
asciilifeform: thx for the hands, BingoBoingo .

mod6: It would be really nice to have some sort of long-term monitoring of the shared environment, and ports on the switch/router, etc. Can be done with SNMP traps and rrd tool or MRTG.
mod6: Different problem for a different day, but if we had a NOC page, may help to alert us of various things.
asciilifeform: mod6: indeed
mod6: (Doesn't have to be SNMP either, can just grab the data however, and then plot with gnuplot, rrdtool, whatever works)

BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Is the IRC Rockchip set up for shared accounts yet?
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: i'm not aware that this requires any peculiar setup
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: make yourself a sudo-enabled acct, disable pw remote login, and it's ready for users
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: I don't have credentials for this machine
asciilifeform: 1s
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: this is rk 'C' ?
BingoBoingo: This is C
asciilifeform: ok 1s..
BingoBoingo: ty
asciilifeform: something peculiar with this rk, i get a 'ssh_exchange_identification: read: Connection reset by peer'
asciilifeform: this machine has the new drive ?
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: at your earliest convenience, plox to take the serial debug snake to dc and emplace
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: This machine has the new drive.
asciilifeform: let's find out asap why the thing dun answer.
BingoBoingo: Aite, prepping for the dungeon
asciilifeform: ty
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: In the basement
asciilifeform: ok, step #1 : disconnect +5v from rk-C and lemme know ( dun reconnect until i say )
BingoBoingo: +5 volt disconnected
asciilifeform: ok, reconnect
BingoBoingo: reconnected
asciilifeform: now gimme coupla min.
asciilifeform: didja bring the probe ?
asciilifeform: by the loox of it, it aint booting
asciilifeform: no ping etc.
BingoBoingo: I have the probe
asciilifeform: plox to connect, as we did earlier, and place usb end of hose in dulap
asciilifeform: then bring rk-c back up, lemme know when ready.
BingoBoingo: Aite, lemme find the instructions
asciilifeform: while you dig, place the rk-c stick in dulap, lemme know when cables are in and time to take the stick back

BingoBoingo: RK stick in dulap, cables almost connected
asciilifeform: ty
BingoBoingo: Waiting for signal to bring RK up
asciilifeform: ok gimme a few
BingoBoingo wonders if this one has new kernel
asciilifeform: ok let's re-emplace the stick in rk-c
asciilifeform: and lemme know once powered.
BingoBoingo: Stick emplaced
asciilifeform: now +5v plox
BingoBoingo: Powering on
asciilifeform: is ethernet in ?
BingoBoingo: Ethernet is in, I see no blinkenlights. Power cycle?
asciilifeform: plz
BingoBoingo: Power cycled, see blinkenlights
asciilifeform: it boots and kernel panics
asciilifeform: do you have spare sd and stick in the bilge ?
asciilifeform: give the thing another cycle, i want to see if this is consistent
BingoBoingo: power cycled
asciilifeform: aand again plz
asciilifeform: i want a couple, it seems to die in diff place ea. time
BingoBoingo: power cycled again
BingoBoingo: Signal when you are ready for the next
asciilifeform: ready for next
BingoBoingo: cycled
asciilifeform: ok 1 more time:
BingoBoingo: cycled
asciilifeform: now yank 5v, move stick to usb2 jack, and restart
BingoBoingo: powering with stick in usb2 jack
asciilifeform: ok can switch it off
asciilifeform: at this point 100% certainty that it's either dead stick or dead rk
asciilifeform: dies in diff place ea. time
asciilifeform: plox to insert 1 of the spare new stix into dulap
asciilifeform: and then can go eat, i need 30-40min.
BingoBoingo: Going to retrieve new stick from hab module
asciilifeform: ok
asciilifeform: lemme know when it's in
asciilifeform: ( i suggest to keep'em in bilge )
BingoBoingo: One new stick into Dulap, the rest into bilge

BingoBoingo: ok
asciilifeform: ok, nao put the new stick from dulap into usb3 in rk-c and powerup plox
BingoBoingo: Powering up

asciilifeform: loox like we're out an rk
BingoBoingo: damn
asciilifeform: i'ma have a replacement send your way asap, lemme know if addr still same or whether box needs speshul instructions to make it through orcs
asciilifeform: reset the thing 1 moar time plox, then leave it.
BingoBoingo: resetting
asciilifeform: ok indeed dead.
BingoBoingo: Aite, I'll withdraw and GPGgram instructions. Address is going to need a magic string added for Aduanas
asciilifeform: yank the power to it & leave it.
asciilifeform: ty
asciilifeform: lemme know re magic string etc. asap.
BingoBoingo: Retract the probe?
asciilifeform: aha
asciilifeform: can you unscrew the board without disturbing others ?
asciilifeform: ideally i'd like it posted via snailmail like we did with the drives.
BingoBoingo: I'll power down the board, unscrewing looks iffy.
asciilifeform: it'll have to come out sooner or later
asciilifeform: but ok for nao
asciilifeform: it appears that we will not be able to satisfy lobbes et al, until we get replacement, unless you have box with spare cycles to put'em on
asciilifeform: so would like to get replacement asap, i'd like to send at least 3
BingoBoingo: My Rockchip should be able to handle some bouncers in the interim.
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: ty. lemme know if you need help re setup.
BingoBoingo: Will do, putting the bilge back together and withdrawing
asciilifeform: it is headache that i have 100% nfi what nuked the thing
asciilifeform: or when
asciilifeform: it's been sitting idle for months
BingoBoingo: USB jack maybe wore out after all the insertions debugging the old drives?
asciilifeform: that wouldn't explain why dies same when using auxiliary jack
asciilifeform: oh btw
asciilifeform: can we try it on separate power supply ?
asciilifeform: can use cable from dulap, if you have one there
BingoBoingo: Will try that
asciilifeform: lemme know when about to fire it
asciilifeform: ( re-emplace the snake plox )
BingoBoingo: snake replaced about to power up
asciilifeform: 1s

asciilifeform: mod6: you never got the new disk, didja
BingoBoingo: Would you like a fresh RockchipB image with the old drive plugged into a USB 2.0 port?
mod6: No, which is perhaps part of the problem.
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: usb3 plox. and give him the newly-imaged stick orig. prepared for the dead unit.
mod6: BingoBoingo: think that'll work? whatever is easist is fine with me. It's not like I have a ~ton~ of stuff on there.
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: after it boots, plug his orig into the usb2, so he can restore data.
asciilifeform: iirc mod6's was the last rk that still had the rotten drive.
mod6: From memory, that seems correct ^.
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: His is indeed the last with the bad drive
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: he was on 'E' or which ?
BingoBoingo: His drive however is not C, but B.
BingoBoingo: .195
mod6: No rush to do this immediately or anything. When you have some time tomorrow or whatever makes sense is great.
asciilifeform: 'B' aha
mod6: Yes, I have .195.
mod6: I only brought up -C since that was about the time that I discovered the issue, and totally forgot to mention it in here.
mod6: I apologize for that.

asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: when can you get to the cage ?
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Tomorrow is most convenient
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: put the new stick in dulap 1st, i'd like to reimage it just in case the dying rk munged it

mod6: oh boy... lets see...
mod6: couldn't say exactly... but I believe last time I was actively using it was like six weeks ago? sometime in december perhaps?
asciilifeform: aite
mod6: I don't muck with it too often. It just sits there and does it's thing, pretty well honestly.
mod6: Anyway, thank you Gentlemen. I appreciate the effort & help.
mod6: While we're at it here... BingoBoingo, when & where is good for the next round of BTC for Pizzaro? Anytime & your deedbot wallet?

BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: It looks like I don't need any of the attachments to get it free, but it appears that since I'm a business you they attached a list or two of "ciertos tipos de mercaderías" and now the "on" bit is stuck in my curiosity register.
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: there were 2 pdf turds, 1 proclaiming that 'health products from internet' verboten, the other -- unblessed satellite receivers
mod6: Mornin'. I've got a question for whenever anyone has a moment. I bought a new SSD and threw it on /dev/sdb, then I grabbed cuntoo and all the sig, unpacked, then pointed it at /dev/sdb with the kernel config that trinque provides.
mod6: But when I swap around the drives to SATA1 so it'll boot, I just see: Loading Cuntoo................ BIOS data check successful
mod6: Then that's it, just seems to hang. Am I missing something?
mod6: Maybe I need my own kern config?
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: The health products from the internet list is the one triggering the curiosity
asciilifeform: there's no list in there, just a 1 para. general thing.
asciilifeform: mod6: you prolly forgot to include your own kernel config, yea
BingoBoingo: Motherfuckers
mod6: ooh, maybe I see the problem. I did do an `fdisk -l /dev/sdb` before I shut it down, everything is blown into there. which is what I told it to do... the /etc/fstab was probably written out the same way. And won't boot because not /dev/sda.
mod6: So I'll have to just boot the old OS, and chroot in and change up the fstab, then reboot i'm guessing.
mod6: asciilifeform: Sure, I'll try that after this. Thanks guys!
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: http://p.bvulpes.com/pastes/buydo/?raw=true << tar.gz with the turds, for your curiosity
asciilifeform brb,tea
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: ty
mod6: huh, well, I guess I was wrong. once in the chroot, the /etc/fstab is setup to be /dev/sda{1,2,3}
mod6: must need my own kern conf. will have to try that. cheers
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Documents were deposited
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: aite, lemme know if you need anyffin else.
BingoBoingo: Will do
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: the tracking link thing is in there, so you oughta be able to see if it gets wedged.
BingoBoingo: Right
BingoBoingo: In the worst case I can poke people
asciilifeform: aite.
BingoBoingo: Turns out the chinese dumped what appear to be servicable Picanas here should intense poking be required
asciilifeform: lol
BingoBoingo: Of course this is cow country
mod6: Ok well this time, I just wholesale used my /usr/src/linux/.config with the cuntoo bootstrap script. However, I get a bit further in the boot process, but now seems hung still: http://p.bvulpes.com/pastes/Hf7VZ/?raw=true
mod6: not sure what I'm missing here. It's a intel i5 box with 8gb of ram, and the disk is a SATA SSD 250Gb
mod6: The kernel config that I copied from my running gentoo is a totally basic kernel.
mod6: ok, will try some other things.
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: crate still stuck, seems. see if you can find out why.
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: After they get the papers it stays stuck a couple more days because no automation. DHL's dispatcher has to go through the tramites in order. Based on history Thursday's the day to start poking gently.
asciilifeform: aa
BingoBoingo: Just one of those small country things like Vending machines not existing
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: dunno re vending machines, i had one of the best cups of coffee in years from airport vending machine in timis
asciilifeform: was serious mindfuck.
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Timis is part of a relatively big country. No one is making a machine to eat UYU coins and small bills
asciilifeform: bigger but emptier
BingoBoingo: Well gotta fill all the kioskos with some bodies
asciilifeform: lol
BingoBoingo: The demand for impulse purchased junk food must be sated!
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Package is in hand, one Rockchip board one heatsink. Going to arrange with the datacenter to get a second pair of hands admitted for the operation.
asciilifeform: waitwhy
asciilifeform: why second pair
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: To hold the rockchip shelf in place and ensure nothing gets dropped.
asciilifeform: who's yer 2nd pair , then ?
BingoBoingo: Peruana
asciilifeform: aa
asciilifeform: if her hands grow from right place, wainot
asciilifeform: make sure to issue an alert in #t for rk people re possible downtime
asciilifeform: ( even if very good hands, there's a chance )
BingoBoingo: Will do, planning to do the operation tomorrow. Will alert.
asciilifeform: also a++ , ordered jan. 24, and <6day from my pressing button to BingoBoingo obtaining crate
BingoBoingo: Magic environment paper is magic
asciilifeform: verily
BingoBoingo: Only one intervention needed in dealing with DHL
asciilifeform: notbad
BingoBoingo: Please issue an invoice for your Rockchip ordering.
asciilifeform: will do this evening, ty
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Prepping to head to the basement to set up the tooling, screws, and set the new drive up in Dulap
BingoBoingo: To be followed by trip with the hands to perform the surgery
asciilifeform: take the sd reader also
mod6: oh hey!
mod6: gl today gents
BingoBoingo: sd adapter is in hand
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: sd adapter (unloaded) and drive are in dulap
BingoBoingo: sd will be placed after extraction from the deceased
BingoBoingo withdrawing for return
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Advise me when the USB key is imaged
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: plox to remind me which unit/ip this one will be
asciilifeform: ( 'C' ? )
BingoBoingo: This is indeed C
asciilifeform: ok, 1s
BingoBoingo: No hurry, the hands are in the shower getting presentable for the basement
asciilifeform: drive is ready.
asciilifeform: and set for c/196.
asciilifeform: i suspect we first try with existing sd, if dunwork -- then reimage.
asciilifeform: *suggest we
BingoBoingo: Cool, will begin the walk over in about 15-20 minutes. Heatsink has been placed on RockChip
asciilifeform: a++
asciilifeform: plox to make announcement in #t re possible risk of rk reset.
BingoBoingo: Well, the tricky thing about the SD is it cannot be removed and replaced while the plant is in place. But trying existing sd appears the safer route the offers minimal time unscrewed from the posts
asciilifeform: ok
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: New Rockchip is in place, responsing to pings
asciilifeform: a++
